Presented by BEAT Children's Theatre, this adaptation by Tim Kelly of the literary classic you’ve loved for years tells the story of Mary Lennox, known as a difficult child, sent to live at her uncle’s estate in England after her parents pass away. Misselthwaite Manor turns out to be a gloomy fortress. Her uncle is rarely home, and his young son, Colin, never leaves his room, convinced he’s an incurable invalid. To her surprise, Mary discovers a strange walled garden that has been locked up for years. With the assistance of Dickon, the gardener’s apprentice, Mary brings the garden back to life and discovers Dickon’s amazing ability to communicate with animals. The garden seems to have a wonderful, magical effect on all who come into it, allowing Mary to help restore Colin to health and to reunite him with his father. This version also introduces the endearing Sowerby family, who add much laughter and love to this touching story. Take time to smell the roses.

An added bonus to the show is the startling transformation of the stage from the starkness of sorrow and isolation to an extraordinary space full of vibrancy and the over 200 individual flowers contributed by local artists. These flowers are being auctioned off in a silent auction to support BEAT's programs so you can take your little piece of the garden home with you!

Sing with OperaBend!
(Starting NOW!)

As we prepare for an exciting two months ahead, we invite you to take a more active role in bringing opera to life in our community. There are several meaningful ways to get involved, and we would love to have you be part of the OperaBend experience.

Join the Chorus

We are currently seeking singers to join the OperaBend Chorus for our upcoming production of Die Fledermaus (performed in English). Rehearsals are held once a week and are already underway, with more frequent staging rehearsals beginning June 6. This is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate, perform, and be part of a vibrant artistic community.

Host an Artist

We are also looking for generous hosts to house four out-of-town OperaBend artists from June 5–22. Ideally, hosts can provide a private bedroom (and preferably a private bathroom). Access to a kitchen and refrigerator would be greatly appreciated. Hosting is a meaningful way to directly support the artists who make our productions possible.

Volunteer with Us

Finally, we are seeking volunteers to assist as ushers and with patron check-in for our upcoming performances:

  The Medium – May 23 & 24
  Die Fledermaus – June 19 & 21

Volunteering is a great way to support OperaBend while engaging with our audiences and performances.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, or if you have questions, please reach out to us at mail@operabend.org.

Thank you for being such an important part of the OperaBend community. We look forward to creating another inspiring season together.

OperaBend has received the Gold Seal from Candid.org—providing comprehensive data to donors and grant foundations.  Click on the link to find out all about us!  OperaBend Profile on Candid.org

As we prepare for this exciting lineup, your support is more important than ever. A tax-deductible gift of any size helps us pay artists, rent rehearsal space, build sets and costumes, and keep high-quality opera accessible to Central Oregon.

Please consider making a donation today and join us as we continue our exciting OperaBend 25-26 season. See you all at the opera!

* What is a flute choir? A flute choir is an instrumental ensemble comprising the different members of the flute family. Just as parts in a vocal choir (soprano, alto, etc.) have different vocal ranges and qualities, flute family instruments have varying musical ranges and sound qualities. Most prevalent is the familiar “concert” or C flute you know and love from bands and orchestras. To this is added the rich, warm, and resonant sounds of the “low flutes” – the alto and bass. Occasionally the piccolo adds a bright, soaring melody or a lovely descant above the melodic line. All this gives flute choir music rich, complex musical interest we know you will enjoy!

Do you play flute? Or did you used to play and want to get back into it? Check us out at our webpage , and submit a contact message if you’re interested in joining!

Acclaimed Pianist to Open Sunriver Music Festival’s 49th Summer Concert Season!

By Jon F. Thompson

SUNRIVER, Ore – What does genius look like? It might look a lot like Sunriver Music Festival’s guest artist Michelle Cann, a two-time Grammy winner and one of the most sought-after artists of her generation.

She’s coming to Central Oregon for Sunriver Music Festival’s opening concert August 10, at which she will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major.

Michelle Cann doesn’t just play piano. She owns it. She dominates it as she uses it to extract every scintilla of meaning of the composer’s intent. That’s a factor that makes her special. Another factor is that while she plays, she also listens.

Brett Mitchell, Artistic Director & Conductor of Sunriver Music Festival says of Cann, “She’s a diligent performer and an incredibly sensitive musician, a real collaborator. She makes chamber music with the orchestra; she listens to the orchestra and responds to it, just as the orchestra responds to her.”

Mitchell says he finds Cann to be “an artist’s artist. She’s a probing personality, someone who asks a lot of questions. So many pianists are interested in flash for flash’s sake. She has flash, but she’s deeper than that.”

There’s more to a great performance than just playing the music, notes Mitchell, himself a formidable pianist. There is also respecting the composer’s intent.

“If your sound stays the same from one composer to the next, that’s a case of making the composer serve you,” Mitchell explained. “Michelle is intent on serving the composer. If I heard 10 pianists playing Mozart, for instance, I certainly could pick out Michelle.”

Cann’s ability to probe the intent of composers as diverse as Mozart and Florence Price, a Black 20th-century American composer, is especially impressive because their styles are so different, Mitchell said.

“The musical material is so different. The extraordinary thing is they require such different musicians to perform them. Just because you can perform one doesn’t mean you can perform the other. The fact that Michelle can do both in an equally convincing fashion is testament to her musicianship,” Mitchell said. That musicianship is one reason why Mitchell is looking forward to Cann’s performance in Sunriver.

“I think Beethoven’s Fourth is my favorite Beethoven piano concerto, the most special,” Mitchell added. “I can’t wait for everyone to experience her work.”

Cann is not just a spectacular artist. She’s also an accomplished scholar who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music. She teaches at the Curtis School of Music in Philadelphia, where she holds the Eleanor Sokoloff Chair in Piano Studies, and is a member of the piano faculty of the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

Michelle Cann will perform with the Festival Orchestra during Sunriver Musical Festival’s opening concert on Monday, August 10, at 7:30 pm in the Sunriver Resort Great Hall. In addition to Beethoven’s Piano Concerto in G Major, the concert will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary by performing Joan Tower’s Made in Americaand Josef Hayden’s Symphony No. 101 in D Major, “The Clock.”

Tickets for all of Sunriver Music Festival’s August 2026 season concerts are available at sunrivermusic.org or calling 541-593-1084. The Festival opens August 10 at the Sunriver Resort Great Hall and closes August 20 at the Tower Theatre in downtown Bend.

About Michele Michael

In the artist’s words:

“I was raised in the countryside of Ohio farmlands and spent my youth creating everything from hand-drawn paper dolls to detailed illustrations in Microsoft Paint. I spent most of my teenage years and 20s dismissing my creativity, instead studying photojournalism and working odd jobs. I moved out west to Olympia, WA in 2009 and immediately fell in love with the natural beauty of the mountains, rivers and coastlines of the American West, as well as the outdoor recreation community. I started working at REI, and did so for over 10 years, which gave me a business mindset, an intimate knowledge with retail, and most importantly, the introduction to my husband and business partner, Jeff.

That job also took me to multiple locations in Washington, Alaska, and Oregon. After living all over the Pacific Northwest, I deepened my love of the outdoors and was drawn to bigger adventures. However, I did not feel compelled to capture the beauty of the natural world in art until Jeff and I spent a year traveling the world. With the rise of social media, and being exposed to artists of all kinds, I felt inspired to finally paint and draw again. I started posting my small sketches on Instagram and was encouraged by friends and strangers. I got my first commission while living in New Zealand; it was a request to draw...the Three Sisters mountains!

When we returned state-side, we settled in my husband’s hometown of Bend, Oregon, and I started my art business shortly thereafter.

I started designing stickers and got my first retail account in 2018. My art and business has slowly grown, and I am proud to have my art in many local shops, as well as seven National Parks (and counting!). Along with my husband, we support our family with our business. I still live in Bend (in Three Rivers area now) with Jeff, our two young children, and our mutt dog. In 2022, I made the leap to pursue art full-time. I feel like the luckiest gal in the world to make art for a living!”
