SUNRIVER MUSIC FESTIVAL PRESENTS INTERNATIONAL AWARD-WINNING PIANIST VITALY STARIKOV!

Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Silver Medalist (awarded June 2025) Vitaly Starikov to perform at the Sunriver Resort Great Hall August 12 and 13.

The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition is widely considered “one of the most prestigious contests in classical music” (The New York Times, June 2022). From its origins in 1962 through today, it has remained dedicated to sharing music with the largest international audience possible and to launching the careers of its winners. Sunriver Music Festival has the honor of presenting Cliburn medalists every few years and this 48th season August 2-13 welcomes the brand new silver-medalist Vitaly Starikov.

“For me, true art is possible only when it is created with conscience and authenticity. I am inspired by those who remain true to themselves, whether through their actions, teaching, or performances.” – Vitaly Starikov, piano.

Born into a family of musicians, Vitaly Starikov’s journey started when his parents enrolled him to sing in a children’s music group at age 3, and he went on to Ural Musical School for Gifted Children in his native Yekaterinburg at 7. He made his concerto debut at age 10 with the Ural State Russian Folk Orchestra, and his recital debut three years later. It was at 14 that he committed his life to music. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the famed Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and is now at the Yale School of Music, pursuing an artist diploma.

Recital and chamber music appearances have taken him around the world, notably to Austria, Australia, Slovakia, Israel, Cyprus, Italy, France, Belgium, and Malaysia, with highlights including Sydney Opera House, Queen Elisabeth Hall, and the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. He has performed with the Antwerp and Belgian National Orchestras, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Belarusian State Symphony Orchestra, and St. Petersburg Symphony, and toured with the Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est.

Starikov’s appearance in Sunriver on August 12 and 13 is the culmination of Sunriver Music Festival’s August 2-13 concert series, with concerts in Bend and Sunriver. Details and tickets at sunrivermusic.org.

Introducing COSA's New Executive Director!

(Tanya and Travis pictured here at the Spring
Concert series at Mountain View High School)

After 7 years of unwavering dedication to the Central Oregon Symphony, Tanya Elia is retiring from the Executive Director position. She is looking forward to spending her time with family, friends, and traveling. However, she will be continuing with COSA on the Board of Directors as our new Treasurer, and we are looking forward to working with her in this new role.

COSA in Transition

Over the past couple of months, Travis has been working with Tanya, transitioning into the Executive Director position, which he will fully assume this summer.

The two have thoroughly enjoyed working together and had the wonderful opportunity to co-host both our Chamber Concerts as well as the Spring Concert series.

Dr. Travis Allen is honored to be named the next Executive Director of the Central Oregon Symphony Association. A versatile cellist, educator, and arts leader, Dr. Allen has been a part of the classical music scene in Central Oregon since 1996, when he played cello with COS as a high school student. Known for his dedication to performance, chamber music, and music education, he currently serves as Principal Cellist of the Central Oregon Symphony and is the cellist of the Dove String Quartet.

For the past five years, Dr. Allen has served as the Executive Director of the Central Oregon Youth Orchestra (COYO). Under his leadership, COYO has grown in size, scope, and visibility, offering high-quality orchestral training and performance opportunities for young musicians across the region. In addition to his performance and leadership roles, Dr. Allen is a member of the faculty at Central Oregon Community College, where he teaches Music History as well as second-year Music Theory and Musicianship.

He holds a Master’s degree in Cello Performance from Portland State University and both a Master’s and Doctorate in Musicology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. During his time in Portland, Dr. Allen performed with members of the Oregon Symphony and the Portland Opera. He continues to perform regularly, including with the Sunriver Music Festival, and will continue to perform with the Central Oregon Symphony as principal cellist.

If he’s not doing something musical, he is likely on an outdoor adventure with his wife and daughter.
