High Desert Chamber Music Presents:

The Central Oregon Debut of

The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass!

High Desert Chamber Music, in collaboration with the Tower Theatre Foundation, presents the Central Oregon debut of The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass on Sunday, March 5 at the Tower Theatre. Marsalis, principal trumpet for the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, leads a veritable “dream team” of virtuoso brass players in a high-powered display of infectious beats from Bach to Bourbon Street.

Opening the concert is the region’s premiere youth ensemble, the Youth Choir of Central Oregon. The evening also showcases a special onstage collaboration with High Desert Chamber Music violinist Isabelle Senger. Marsalis and Senger were roommates in the mid-90s while performing together in the San Diego Symphony.

The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass is known for their musicianship, personality, and dedication to bringing joy to audiences of all ages. Jens Lindemann, a former member of The Canadian Brass, says, “The RMPBB is a quantum leap forward in what a brass group can bring to an audience. It simply is the next big thing." Jazz virtuoso, Wynton Marsalis, declared, “No one plays absolutely beautifully all the time…unless you’re my cousin Rodney.” The collaborative performance will truly be a treat for all, young and old, classic and contemporary.

Join the Brass Band in Bend on Sunday, March 5 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available through the Tower Theatre Box office (835 NW Wall), by phone (541-317-0700), or online (www.TowerTheatre.org).

Piano Virtuosity at the Tower Theatre!

April 1st’s Piano Showcase at the Tower Theatre features concert pianist Sean Chen, a genius at displaying the virtuosity and versatility of the grand instrument. An award-winning classical pianist (Cliburn International Piano Competition, American Pianists Awards), Chen is also in demand for creative collaborations and commissions. His exceptional transcriptions for the piano range from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony to video game music and everything in between.

Chen’s musical flexibility is a perfect fit for Sunriver Music Festival’s annual Piano Showcase emphasis on the uniqueness of blending genres. Currently Artist-in-Residence at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, he continues to appear in solo and concerto performances throughout the United States and has been featured with the Sunriver Music Festival Orchestra several times. Given his natural inclination for teaching and approachable personality, Mr. Chen is particularly in demand for appearances that combine performances with masterclasses and artist conversations, which have brought him to such institutions as the Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana University, University of British Columbia, University of Houston Moores School, the Los Angeles Music Center, Young Artist World Piano Festival, and several Music Teachers’ Associations throughout the country.

Saturday, April 1 at the Tower Theatre will highlight Chen’s multifaceted expertise:

  • At 3:00 p.m., all ages are invited right up onto the Tower stage for the Masterclass & Musical Conversations session. You don’t have to be a pianist to enjoy a masterclass; you just have to enjoy music! A masterclass is a great opportunity to be a “fly on the wall” as an advanced young pianist performs and receives spontaneous feedback from our master, Sean Chen.
  • 7:30 p.m. is the concert featuring Sean Chen in a full-length solo performance of virtuosic piano pieces including some of Chen’s brilliant original transcriptions and compositions.

Tickets on sale now at sunrivermusic.org or by phoning 541-593-1084.
All seats are reserved and prices range from $30-$65; $25 tickets for ages 25 and under.

Julie Hanney's Album Release Concert!

Saturday, February 18th at 3pm
at Grace First Lutheran Church
2265 NW Shevlin Park Road, Bend, OR

Pianist, composer, teacher and music director Julie Hanney is holding an album release concert to celebrate the release of her fourth solo piano album Everyday Miracles. Come hear songs from her newest album as well as some iconic songs from other genres. Julie will be accompanied by a few phenomenal local musicians for part of the concert. Admission is free and Julie's CDs, sheet music and music download info will be available. Everyday Miracles was released by Heart Dance Records of Arizona, as was her previous album titled Where the Ocean Meets the Sky. Her newest album was born out of taking time to appreciate all of the amazing, miraculous things that exist in our lives every single day. If we give in to fear or distraction, we can miss the abundance that exists in our natural and spiritual world. From the wonder of birds taking flight to the mathematical patterns and spirals in nature... to the miracle of the present moment, these songs are each a sonic expression of the miraculous, yet universal gifts given to us all. Julie's music is in the peaceful piano/neoclassical genre. It's a bit like George Winston meets romantic music with a hint of jazz thrown in at times. You can find her music on all of the major music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora and more.

The interaction between musicians and the audience makes for a fun night” says Dr. Dan Cathey, the band’s director for the last few years. “I’ve loaded this year’s setlist with beloved swing tunes, cha-chas, waltzes, and more, and, of course, a few showcasing our excellent band members, too.”
