Sunriver Music Festival’s Music Education & Other Free Events!

Sunriver Music Festival presents a variety of music education and other free events open to the public in Bend and Sunriver. The 2023 festival season continues with Pops and Classical concerts through August 17.  The full concert schedule is listed below. 

MUSIC EDUCATION EVENTS

This summer, Sunriver Music Festival presents four free music education opportunities that are open to the public. See artist bios below. 

Oboe Day with Lindabeth Binkley, principal oboe

Thursday, August 10, 10:00 a.m.-3 p.m. at Tower Theatre, Bend
Participants will get the inside scoop on fundamentals, an introduction to oboe reed making, learn about the oboe family of instruments, play in an oboe ensemble, and spend the day exploring this amazing instrument. 

Violin Masterclass with William Hagen, featured soloist

Friday, August 11, 2-3 p.m. at Tower Theatre, Bend
Masterclass participants: John Fawcett, Mateo Garza, Ezra Oncken

Instrument Petting Zoo and Discover the Symphony Concert

Tuesday, August 15, 1:30-4:00 p.m. at Sunriver Resort Great Hall
Petting Zoo opens at 1:30 p.m.; concert starts at 3 p.m.
($15 general admission tickets for concert; free for ages 18 and under)

Piano Masterclass with Andrew von Oeyen, featured soloist

Wednesday, August 16, 2-3:30 p.m., at Sunriver Resort Great Hall

Open Rehearsals
Sunriver Music Festival opens up orchestra rehearsals for the public to attend. Attendees get a behind-the-scenes glimpse as the maestro and orchestra prepare for performances. The open rehearsal schedule is available online here: sunrivermusic.org/events/rehearsal-schedule.

Pre-Concert Talks

Pre-concert talks are held from 6:30 to 7 p.m. before the four classical concerts on August 11, 14 and 17.  Maestro Brett Mitchell hosts the free talks with musician guests.

Artistic Director and Conductor Brett Mitchell leads world-class orchestra musicians from around the country. Concerts are held in two iconic venues: the Tower Theatre in Bend and Sunriver Resort Great Hall. Visit sunrivermusic.org to purchase tickets and to learn more about the Festival’s acclaimed musicians and guest artists. For the main season concerts, tickets start at $36. For those under age 25, tickets are $25. For the Discover the Symphony concert, adult tickets are $15 and ages 18 and under are free.

The 46th season of Sunriver Music Festival continues tomorrow, August 11 with a Classical Concert featuring William Hagen, violin! The concert starts at 7:30 PM at the Tower Theatre in Bend.

Other season performances feature mezzo-soprano Sarah Mattox (August 7), violinist William Hagen (August 11), soprano Kathryn Mueller (August 14), and pianist Andrew von Oeyen (August 15 and 17).

Visit sunrivermusic.org to purchase tickets and to learn more about the Festival’s acclaimed maestro, musicians, and guest artists. For the main season concerts, tickets start at $36. For those under age 25, tickets are $25. For the Discover the Symphony concert, adult tickets are $15 and ages 18 and under are free. Series packages (four classical concerts, a pops concert and a solo piano recital) are available at a 10% discount.

2023 SUMMER FESTIVAL CONCERT SCHEDULE

Classical Concert II – August 11, 2023 – Tower Theatre, Bend, 7:30 p.m.
The return of William Hagen, violin! Last season, Hagen brought down the house with his performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto, and this season’s performance of the Bruch Violin Concerto is expected to be even better. Also on this concert: Milhaud’s La creation du monde and Brahms Third Symphony with an expanded orchestra.

Classical Concert III – August 14, 2023 – Sunriver Resort Great Hall, 7:30 p.m.
Introducing Kathryn Mueller, soprano. Mueller’s crystal clear and pristine voice will sparkle in a beautiful pairing of works by Barber and Mahler. The concert opens with Copland’s lively Three Latin American Sketches.

Discover the Symphony - August 15, 2023 - Sunriver Resort Great Hall, 3:00 p.m.
This entertaining matinee presents orchestral music in a fun and informal setting. Bring the whole family and enjoy a one-hour concert in the Great Hall with virtuosic young soloists and the full orchestra. Free for kids 18 and under, fun for all ages!

Solo Piano Concert – August 15, 2023 – Sunriver Resort Great Hall, 7:30 p.m.
The iconic Great Hall sets the scene for a solo performance from Andrew von Oeyen, one of the most captivating pianists of this generation. “Brilliant technique can be taken for granted among today’s concert pianists, but von Oeyen’s playing goes a step further. He leaves you convinced that he can do absolutely anything he likes with a keyboard.” – Chicago Tribune

Classical Concert IV - August 17, 2023 – Sunriver Resort Great Hall, 7:30 p.m.
The night after his solo piano concert, return to the Great Hall to experience Andrew von Oeyen with the full orchestra in Beethoven’s epic “Emperor” Piano Concerto. Also on this concert: Haydn’s landmark “London” Symphony.
