SAKURA Cello Quintet
Makes Their Central Oregon Debut!

Friday, April 12 at 7:30pm
at the
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon

High Desert Chamber Music’s 16th season, brought to you by German Master Tech, continues with the SAKURA Cello Quintet. A versatile cello quintet hailed as “brilliant” and “superb” by Mark Swed of the Los Angeles Times, SAKURA is built on the artistry and virtuosity of its members: Stella Cho, Michael Kaufman, Yoshika Masuda, Zachary Mowitz, and Peter Myers. Drawing from the rich heritage of a repertoire that spans eight centuries, inventive programs are constructed around conceptual threads, with a commitment to showcasing the great warmth and scope of five cellos.

The program includes arrangements of well-known works like Manuel de Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance, Debussy’s Girl with the Flaxen Hair, and Astor Piazzolla’s Adios Nonino, as well as the premiere of a new work composed by one of its members, Peter Myers.

This concert will take place on Friday, April 12 at 7:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon. Ticket holders may join the musicians at 6:45pm for a pre-concert talk, moderated by Scott Elnes from Central Oregon Daily News.

CO Mastersingers Presents:
Sounds Italian!

FREE CONCERTS
April 20, 2024 at 7:00 PM at Nativity Lutheran Church
April 21, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Sunriver Christian Fellowship
—AND--
June 30, 2024 at The Vatican!

Central Oregon Mastersingers travels to perform in Italy and the Vatican this summer. The group previews its “Sounds Italian” program exclusively for Central Oregonians at its free spring concerts, April 20-21 in Bend and Sunriver.

“As we considered locations for our first international tour, I consulted with Music Contact International to discuss various options and performance venues,” explained Mastersingers’ Conductor Christian Clark. Knowing that a performance at St. Peter's Basilica (The Vatican) would be a mountain-top experience for us, I shared recordings of Central Oregon Mastersingers, which were screened by local officials in Rome, and resulted in our invitation.”

Now, music lovers in Central Oregon get a free sneak preview of the concert and music, featuring Italian composers Giovanni Palestrina (Missa Brevis), Tomas de Victoria (Ave Maria), and Claudio Monteverdi (Cantate Domino).

Said Clark: “Palestrina's Missa Brevis is an absolute gem. We also wanted to showcase our talented musicians (both in Central Oregon and on tour in Italy) by offering selections from other genres as well. We are particularly excited to share R. Nathaniel Dett's lush setting of Ave Maria, Pilgrims' Hymn by Stephen Paulus, and Moses Hogan's exuberant Elijah Rock.”

Performances will be held Saturday, April 20, at 7 p.m., at the Nativity Lutheran Church, 60850 Brosterhous Road in Bend, and Sunday, April 21 at 3 p.m., at the Sunriver Christian Fellowship, 18139 Cottonwood Road. Instead of tickets, donations are welcome and will help support the singers’ performances in Italy.

Clark added a debt of gratitude in announcing this concert: “Central Oregon Mastersingers wouldn't be able to make this trip happen without the support of our community. We are grateful to all who support our endeavors, both here and abroad, and look forward to singing for you very soon.”
