Cascade Winds Winter Concert March 10, 2:00PM at Summit HS!
The Cascade Winds’ Winter Concert will be held in the Summit High School Auditorium on Sunday, March 10. The concert begins at 2:00 PM, with doors opening at 1:30PM. There is no admission charge. The concert program includes a wide range of works, including three pieces which explore different musical forms of dance. Robert Russell Bennett’s famous Suite of Old American Dances is a five- movement work inspired by a performance by the Goldman Band in 1948. Each movement of the work is based on a different dance from the early 20th century. Gary Gilroy’s clever and imaginative Four Dance Episodes captures the essence and variety of four diverse dance styles, full of energy and excitement. And Alfred Reed’s Sixth Suite for Band is a superb suite of symphonic “dances” in separate and contrasting styles, including the eerie and intriguing Halloween Hobgoblin. The program also includes Robert Sheldon’s joyful Otter Point Holiday, which delights the listener with its playful use of harmony and meter. Brian Balmages’ Rippling Watercolors is a wonderful exploration of musical color and emotive potential. W. Francis McBeth’s powerful Kaddish is a memorial to Clifton Williams, McBeth’s teacher, and explores the emotions that surround loss of a friend, but returns ultimately to an affirmation of life. And finally, what Cascade Winds concert would be complete without a rousing march? Maestro Gesme has selected Karl King’s fast-paced Invictus, Latin for “unconquerable.” It opens with a minor- key section featuring low brass and woodwinds. The next section features exciting sounds of the circus, with the trio returning to the minor key before ending with a rock-solid finale, making this march a true “screamer!” We hope you’ll join us!
